Nuclear Decommissioning

Nuclear Decommissioning

eds offer unrivalled expertise in the decommissioning of nuclear power plants & nuclear facilities worldwide. Nuclear decommissioning requires a mass of calculative and technical expertise with health & safety as the paramount focus.

Most recently eds were successful in winning the tender to decommission the obsolete BNFL magnox facility at Chapelcross, Scotland

The Chapelcross nuclear power plant was one of the oldest within the UK, and the very first of its type on Scottish soil. Chapelcross was built on a previously operational war time RAF training base, Chapelcross was commissioned in 1959 and housed 4 x 50 megawatt magnox reactors, along with a processing plant. The magnox reactors were developed to manufacture plutonium for the military, as well as power for the civilian market.

The decline of the Nuclear power station was directly linked to both operational issues and falling electricity prices, electricity was produced and exported to England for the civilian market. Chapelcross eventually became inoperative in the summer of 2004.

Due to several elements of high risk and sheer volume of the task eds were one of a handful of professionals to be considered for the decommissioning of Chapelcross.

The project was completed on time and budget and with an unblemished safety record.
