Health and Safety
eds recognise that the success of the company is dependent upon creating a competent workforce with the necessary skills, training and experience to meet customer requirements. Accordingly, we value company employees as our greatest asset.
Competency Training - eds ensures that all employees, at every level, are trained in all relevant aspects of their trade and the industry, thus ensuring a safe, efficient and expert service. Training is given by either external providers or by eds senior management as appropriate. Records are maintained on a matrix, which is continually updated.
Induction and Toolbox Training - eds ensure that both the client's requirements and the company standards are explained at project specific inductions to ensure operatives work safely at all times. Also, operatives receive weekly toolbox talks from Site Management to enforce and promote safety awareness.
Professional Advice - The control of safety risk is paramount and to this end, eds employ a full time Safety, Health and Environment Manager and retain the services of an independent Occupational Health and Safety Risk Management Practice.
Demolition Safety Management - The requirements of the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2007 apply to all forms of demolition works. eds have a wide experience of its application to decommissioning projects and working as a duty holder under these requirements. To aid all parties involved, eds offer a full consultancy service to guide, assist and advise clients in ensuring they meet their obligations both practically and effectively.
Managing Safety
The methods of work employed by eds are selected based on minimising risk and maximising the quality of materials from the structures, which are recycled. This is facilitated by pre-planning of work sequences followed by careful segregation of materials at each stage. All methods of work are selected following an initial risk assessment at tender stage by our experienced Management Team. Following the initial assessment, where required for all complex structures, the services of a consulting structural engineer are employed who specialises in demolition and the safe use of explosives.
Our ongoing investment in the latest plant and equipment technology results in a safer and more environmentally friendly service. We endeavor to reduce the need for personnel to work at close quarters to the structure being demolished, thus resulting in a safer working environment. The use of equipment such as pulverisers to demolish concrete, minimise environmental emissions in the form of noise and vibration. Shears are used for the cutting and processing of heavy steel sections, avoiding the need for traditional hot cutting methods and the associated inherent risks this process carries. Many projects are carried out in close proximity to sensitive areas, live operating plants and public places such as roads, railway lines, footpaths and occupied buildings.
Safety Management System
In addition, our day-to-day performance is controlled by a comprehensive safety management system which is detailed in company procedures, developed in house, in line with best practice and comprises of the following company documents-
Health & Safety Policy, Environmental Management Policy, Health & Safety Working Standards, Core Risk Assessment, Core COSHH Assessment, Manual Handling Assessment, Noise and Vibration Standards, Employee Health & Safety Handbook.
These documents are the supplemented by project specific method statements and risk assessments which, where required, are incorporated into the project construction phase health & safety plan. Additional documents which may also be provided by eds are:
Environmental Plans/Assessments, eds Permit to Work System, Safety Action Plan, Crane/Lifting Plan
Occupational Health & Safety
eds employs the services of an EMAS registered Doctor and a consultant nurse to carry out regular health monitoring of eds employees and provide advice on potential health hazards or issues, which may be encounted during the conduct of company business.
