Demolition of a Citric Acid Plant
The ADM (Archer Daniels Midland) Site covers an area of approximately 40 Acres and is located on the coast on the southeast side of County Cork, Ireland. The ADM Site comprised a mixture of administrative buildings, process plant and storage tanks. The site was bounded to the west by Pfizer; to the east by a Golf Course, to the North residential properties, to the south by the coastline.
This was a project which involved the total site clearance of the former citric acid plant, including Asbestos Removal, Industrial Cleaning of tanks and vessels, dismantling of plant & equipment, demolition of buildings to ground level, breaking out and removal of all slabs and foundations, crushing the arisings to a 6F2 grade (75mm down to dust) and remediation of contaminated 'hot spots'.
During a 12 month programme, 10,000T of scrap metal was demolished and processed into an 'in-size' material (5ft x 2ft) This material was stockpiled on site and in an effort to minimise / reduce the quantity of long distance transport movements it was removed from site in batches of 2500 tonnes to the Docks (2 minutes from site) where it was loaded direct into boats. eds rented the dock space, chartered the boats and the Carbon steel scrap material was shipped to Liverpool Docks and the non-ferrous material to Germany. This proved to be the most environmentally friendly, cost effective and logistically practical way to remove such large quantities from site.
The work was completed on time and within budget.
As a result of these works, eds have since successfully carried out work on the adjacent Pfizer and GSK sites.
