Case Study - Selective contaminant identification, ‘hotspot’ removal for disposal off site and breakout of large scale heavy foundations

Client: Magna 34

Location: Templeborough Rolling Mills, Rotherham

The Issue

Removal of all ground obstructions and contaminated soils across a 7.5ha former industrial site to enable onward commercial development.

The Objective

Provide clean, unobstructed and fully validated development platforms.

The Solution

  • This large industrial site had seen several phases of development over a two hundred year period, primarily for steel production and rolling. The resulting foundations were up to 9m deep, overlaid and largely unrecorded.
  • Therefore the remediation strategy developed and agreed with all stakeholders required flexibility to manage the unexpected.
  • Due to the extent of hard cover and massive foundations extensive pre-sampling of soils was not viable.
  • A full time environmental scientist worked alongside the excavation teams testing, consigning and validating soils as the work progressed.
  • 100,000m³ of reinforced concrete was uncovered and broken out and processed to 6F2, which was eventually backfilled to produce large development platforms. Materials placed were tested regularly for particle size distribution and compacted in 300mm layers to ensure compliance with the specification and for final validation of the site. At peak 3 crushers and fifteen major items of plant were deployed.
  • The work exposed Roman remains which under the supervision of archaeologists were carefully uncovered and recorded. A protective layer of sand was placed over the area and the remains accommodated without disturbance into the overall development.
