Ryton Redevelopment
A project to demolish the former Peugeot car factory, removal of Asbestos, break out slabs and foundations, crush all hardcore arisings and remediate the site to enable the construction of new distribution warehouses.
The work was carried out over an 8 month period and involved the recycling of over 25,000 Tonnes of Scrap Metal, processing and recycling of 70,000 cubic metres of concrete and the remediation of 30,000 cubic metres of contaminated ground.
All existing concrete floor slabs and foundations were broken out, processed and crushed leaving the material stockpiled on site for utilisation during construction works. The existing tarmac car parks & roadways were removed by road planning techniques and the material recycled for re-use. Following removal of slabs these areas were left in a flat condition free of any trip hazards to an agreed level. This ensured that the area was reduced to a suitable level to enable construction of a new distribution facility.
During the hard-standing removal and remediation phase, EDS worked closely with Archaeologists in the areas of potential interest which required careful and controlled excavation techniques to avoid damage to the existing sub-strata. Other Environmental issues encountered during the contract Involved issues with Newts, Sand martins and Japanese Knotweed all of which were dealt with in accordance with the Ecologists requirements and recommendations.
The project, spanning 8 months from November 2007 to July 2008, was completed on programme and budget to the client’s total satisfaction
